Peace Family,
Here’s the Rundown: your views can climb all year while the phone stays quiet, because the dashboard answers a different question than the one you’re asking. Here’s what those numbers really count, who actually sees your posts, & the table that says where your next marketing hour pays.
The trap: views up, phone quiet
Picture a two-truck junk removal crew in Florissant: garage-cleanout videos posted, best clip boosted, reach graph climbing. The dashboard says the business is growing. Saturday says otherwise: two calls, one no-show, a truck parked until noon.
The dashboard’s favorite number is the impression, & an impression only means your post loaded on someone’s screen: Meta counts it whether or not the video plays or anyone stops to look [1]. I learned this lesson myself in 2022, in my music licensing business.
Who actually sees your posts?
When you pick a target audience, the platform’s system picks the people. Researchers ran real job & housing ads with deliberately neutral targeting & the platform still delivered them to audiences skewed by gender & race [2]. The government reached the same conclusion: HUD charged Facebook under the Fair Housing Act [3], & the Justice Department settled the first algorithmic-bias case under that law with Meta [4]. TikTok has a chapter too: it publicly apologized to its Black creators after posts tagged #BlackLivesMatter briefly showed zero views [5].
So if you’ve posted consistently & still felt invisible, you’re not the only one. The field was tilted, & it wasn’t your fault. This isn’t a call to delete anything. It’s evidence to stop measuring your worth by a number on a platform you don’t own.
Your row: search vs. social, in one table
Ruler followed more than 5 million conversions across 13 industries; on average, search visitors become customers at about double the rate of social visitors [6]. Find your row:
| Industry | From Google search | From social posts |
|---|---|---|
| Automotive | 5.7% | 3.51% |
| Beauty & Cosmetic | 3.2% | 0.76% |
| Construction & Engineering | 4.8% | 1.59% |
| Education | 7.4% | 8.78% |
| Finance | 5.4% | 1.57% |
| Health & Social Care | 1.8% | 1.19% |
| Legal | 7.3% | 2.16% |
| Marketing & Advertising | 5.8% | 1.13% |
| Professional Services | 8.1% | 1.70% |
| Real Estate | 2.4% | 0.93% |
| Retail & eCommerce | 2.0% | 1.74% |
| Software | 7.9% | 2.74% |
| Travel | 1.8% | 1.18% |
(Unpaid visits on both sides; the paid columns track the same pattern, & Ruler’s page holds all four [6].)
In junk-removal terms: of a hundred people who click through from Google, about five book. Of a hundred from a boosted post, about two. The honest flip side: education converts better from social, & if people buy what you sell straight off the feed, the feed is doing real work. Ruler’s own caveat: social often sparks interest that closes later through another door, like email or an AI assistant [6], & those doors get their own posts here. The AI one is already on my list.
The free check tonight: ask your last ten customers how they found you, open your Google card’s performance numbers, & weigh each channel against the hours & dollars you give it.
Social is still your proof-of-work gallery, the before-&-after that makes a referred customer comfortable calling. I’m working on a follow-up about making those three platforms work harder for a local business. Until then, find your row & put your next marketing hour where it pays.
What the check can’t tell you is the order: which fix moves revenue first. That’s the consultation: $125 for the hour, & you leave with the prioritized list either way. There’s founding pricing for early St. Louis clients, posted plainly with the whole service at St. Louis SEO consultant. This is my gift back to the city that shaped me.
