A suspended Google Business Profile means Google has pulled your business card off Search and Maps, or locked you out of editing it, because something on the profile broke its rules. You get one appeal path, and Google asks you to fix the violation before you can move forward (Google).
What a Suspension Means (and Which Kind You Have)
There are two kinds, and knowing yours tells you how much time you have. Google’s product-expert community guide describes a soft suspension as a profile that stays live on Search and Maps while you can’t edit it, and a hard suspension as one that’s off Search and Maps until an appeal restores it (Google Business Profile Community).
Its author, Claudia Tomina, is a Product Expert, a volunteer who doesn’t work for Google, so read it as a shared experience rather than policy.
So search your business name on your phone. If the card is still sitting there and your edits keep bouncing, you’re soft-suspended and customers can still find you today. If the card is gone, you’re dark, and every hour costs you.
Why It Happened: the Guidelines People Break Without Knowing
Almost nobody gets suspended on purpose. The community guide lists the usual triggers: a business name stuffed with keywords, a P.O. Box or virtual office used as the address, duplicate listings, an address Google can’t verify, and drastic edits like a fast name or category change (Google Business Profile Community). Google’s policy overview covers the rest, including account-level restrictions and businesses that aren’t eligible (Google).
I came one step from this myself. My first time out, I accidentally created two Google cards for my own business, and the live one had no phone number. Duplicate cards break Google’s guidelines (Google), and I caught mine before Google did, which is the only reason a beginner mistake stayed a mistake. I wrote about that hour in why hiring an SEO consultant can boost your sales.
Everything below is the path I mapped when I thought I’d need it.
Fix the Violation Before You Touch the Appeal
Google puts the instruction above the appeal button: make sure your profile follows all the guidelines first (Google). The community guide says submitting without fixes often leads to denial (Google Business Profile Community).
Before you write a word of appeal: pull the keywords and taglines out of the name field, use the real physical address for a storefront, hide the address & list service areas if you travel to customers, and make your name, address, and phone match everywhere else online (Google Business Profile Community).
Google also says not to create a new profile for the same business while your appeal is under review (Google). A second card is how a bad week becomes a bad quarter.
How to Unsuspend a Google Business Profile: the Reinstatement Checklist
The appeal is short; the evidence carries it:
- Gather documents. Google names official business registration, a business license, tax certificates, and utility bills, with the name & address matching the profile (Google). The community guide adds that the primary proof is your EIN and Articles of Incorporation, and that invoices alone aren’t enough (Google Business Profile Community).
- Open the appeals tool and pick the profile. It shows the restricted profile, the reason for the action, and a link to the policy Google says you broke (Google).
- Say what you fixed, briefly. The community guide’s example reads: “We removed marketing keywords from the business name and updated our service-area settings to hide the address per guidelines” (Google Business Profile Community).
- Upload the evidence in one sitting. Once you open the evidence form, Google gives you 60 minutes to submit it or it won’t be attached, and the decision comes back by email (Google).

How Long It Takes, and What to Do If You’re Denied
Plan in days. The community guide says reviews take a minimum of 24 hours and can run to weeks, longer for complex or sensitive categories (Google Business Profile Community). The appeals tool shows the status: Submitted, Approved, Not Approved, Can’t be appealed, or Eligible for appeal (Google).
If the answer is no, you still have a door. Google offers an additional review of a denied request, where you can add evidence you left out the first time (Google). The community guide’s advice for that round: reread Google’s email, fix what it cites, strengthen the proof, and don’t resubmit an unchanged appeal (Google Business Profile Community).
It’s the same shape as a disabled Instagram account: one automated door, and the owners who ride it out have something the platform can’t switch off.
What You Lose While You’re Dark
Customers are 70% more likely to visit a business with a complete Business Profile, by Google’s own numbers (Google), and a hard suspension takes that lift to zero.
The same page reports customers are 2.7 times more likely to consider a business reputable, and 50% more likely to consider buying from it, when the profile is complete (Google).
While you wait, send people somewhere you own: your website, your email list, your phone number on other listings.
Staying Reinstated: the Prevention Habits
Reinstatement is the hard way to learn the rulebook. Google’s guidelines are the whole test: one profile per location, no keywords or taglines in the name field, a precise address for a storefront, service areas only if you go to the customer (Google).
Three habits keep you out of the appeals tool. Change one field at a time, because the community guide notes even an hours update can prompt an integrity check (Google Business Profile Community). Keep your name, address, and phone identical everywhere. And run the fields down my Google Business Profile checklist once a quarter; it already flags the name-field trap.
When the card comes back, put it back to work.
FAQ

The People also ask box for this exact search, captured the day this was written. These are the four questions below, in Google’s own order. Source: Google search results.
How do I unsuspend my Google Business Profile? Fix the guideline violation first, then open Google’s appeals tool, select the profile, and submit the appeal with evidence that your business name and address match your official documents; Google emails the decision (Google).
Why is my Google Business Profile suspended? Usually a rule you didn’t know you broke: keywords in the business name, a P.O. Box or virtual office address, a duplicate listing, an unverifiable address, or edits made too fast (Google Business Profile Community). Google’s policy overview lists the restricted content and eligibility rules behind those calls (Google).
How long does a Google suspension last? It lasts until your appeal is approved, with no fixed clock. Reviews run from a minimum of 24 hours to several days or weeks, longer for complex or sensitive categories (Google Business Profile Community). Reinstatement can also end with a re-verification step by phone, email, video, or postcard (Google).
How do I fix my Google Workspace account has been suspended? Google Workspace is a different product, your business email and documents, so none of the steps here apply. If the Google account managing your profile is restricted, Google routes that appeal through your My accounts page (Google).
If you’d rather have someone walk your profile and your appeal with you, I do a paid consultation for $125 an hour, and you leave with the list whether or not you hire me afterward. Details are on the St. Louis SEO company page.
I hope this helps.
